Movie Rating post
Tells a story which holds the audiences' attention- I would give the film 20 points for this category. Almost every scene had an intense action scene, creating a nerve-wracking atmosphere throughout the entire movie. The first 10 minutes of the movie show a young woman in her car falling down the side of a mountain while the rescue team had a difficult time trying to rescue her out of the car. The last 10 minutes of the movie show the main character Ray performing CPR on his daughter who almost drowned to death.
Demonstrates camera work and editing which enhances the story- I would give this film 15 points for this category. The camera work is good and very dynamic, which adds storytelling and drama to the film. However, the number of quick pans and fast scenes overshadow the calmer and slower scenes which makes the film seem too energetic. This eliminates a lot of space to create a story and instead fills it with action scenes that do not add anything.
Contains dialogue, narration and/or background music which enhances the story- I would give this movie 20 points in this category. The dialogue and background music added to the film enhances the movie completely and helps tell the story. In a scene toward the end of the movie, the main character Ray, and his daughter are both underwater trying to get to each other while a large pane of glass is in the way of them. In this scene, there is muffled, dramatic, emotional music playing in the background. This music choice made the audience feel like they were underwater with the characters and it added sorrow to the scene. In a scene where the college professor is speaking on live television, warning the world of the natural disasters that are to come, he says "May god be with you." This piece of dialogue shows the audience the severity of the situation and makes the scene more dramatic, enhancing the emotions in the story.
Has compelling and interesting actors- I would give this category 15 points. The film's main character Ray is played by Dwayne Johnson. Although he did a good job at the performance, his character type is very overplayed and similar in almost every film he is in. This makes the character Ray a bit predictive and repetitive. Despite his character being boring the other characters were entertaining without being too unrealistic.
