Film Elements, Narrative, and Characters Blog Post
Genre
*The Last Of Us series has action, drama, and thriller elements. This show is a successful example of a show combining the genres of Action, drama, and Thriller. It is a scary show but has action-fighting scenes within it, all while adding an emotional aspect to the different traumas the characters go through. The successful hybridity of the genres can attract all people who enjoy each genre. A person who may not like the genre Drama but does enjoy Thrillers and action will be attracted to the show because of how fluid the combination of genres is. The audience's expectation of the text for all three genres is to have emotional acting and scenes, fast-paced fighting scenes, and suspenseful build-up that makes it a thriller.
Narrative
*The story revolves around a hardened man (Joel Miller) who is living in the middle of a zombie apocalypse after witnessing the tragic death of his 14-year-old daughter Sara. Joel along with his partner in crime Tess are requested by a rebellion group called the Fireflies to take a young girl named Ellie to another Firefly base in a different state for an unknown reason. Little did Joel and Tess know; the girl Ellie is immune to the zombie virus and is being taken to another base so doctors can try to create a vaccine and save the world. The main theme of the story is the question of whether you are really living if you are only living to survive and whether is it worth living without a purpose. The narrative is structured as a "The Hero’s Journey” and a “Point story structure” story. The narrative is built around the conflict of Joel trying to get Ellie to the other Firefly base without any of them dying.
Character
*There are no limiting factors in the series. The main character Joel Miller fits into two different molds. Joel is The Helper and The donor as he protects Ellie throughout the series. Meanwhile, the character Ellie is the princess. One of the characters Sam is eight years old and deaf. His character throughout the show signifies the reality of being deaf and even though they may be deaf, it does not mean they are any different than anyone else.
